BKOR Noordwijk: Visual Arts in Public Spaces
This overview ‘Visual Arts in Public Space (BKOR)‘ is a product of the municipality of Noordwijk that has been published on the internet in PDF format. This PDF was digitized on RouteDesigner at the initiative of RouteMaps, as a service to visitors of this beautiful seaside resort.
The website Noordwijk.Kunstwacht.nl also contained an overview of “Art in public spaces” from the municipality of Noordwijk, but many of the artworks in that map were incorrectly placed. This overview was discontinued in December 2022.
Instead, a special website about BKOR Noordwijk was launched in December 2022: www.bkornoordwijk.nl. The municipality also decided to have a new map created in Google, in addition to the already existing RouteMaps map. This map could be found on the website bkornoordwijk.nl.
In mid-August 2023, the website www.bkornoordwijk.nl was closed again and the municipality created a new map in Google. Not all artworks are in the correct location, and unfortunately, no street names are visible on the map, which is inconvenient for you as a visitor. This new map can be found on the website of Noordwijk Marketing.
The audio fragments added to this map later by the municipality have been temporarily included in this route on RouteMaps as a courtesy. When the street names are included in a better map of the municipality overview, this map will no longer be publicly accessible in RouteMaps.
Foreword
VISUAL ARTS IN PUBLIC SPACE
“Let culture flourish in Noordwijk!”
Culture is everywhere in our villages. It’s connected to our rich history. Our traditions. Our heritage. From the Bulb Region Flower Parade to the Old Jeroenskerk (Old Jeroen’s Church). I’m very proud of it.
In addition to preserving all the beautiful things handed down to us from the past, we face the challenge of adding new, professional, contemporary art to our culture. Our challenge is to add new art. Art with an international appeal.
That’s quite a challenge. Art is much more than just placing a sculpture in a square, a park, or a neighborhood. Does it resonate with us? Do we see something in it that speaks to us? Does it contribute to our culture? Finding the answers to these questions is a wonderful journey of discovery in itself.
In the coming years, we want to emphasize the unique character of our villages with old and new art, but also bring them together effectively as a single municipality. An innovative municipality with an open mind. And a municipality united by shared values.
Let’s be honest. We’re not the only ones who benefit from a flourishing culture. With our old and new art, we can further develop the municipality of Noordwijk as a cultural destination. Just like the beautiful bulb fields of tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, this naturally attracts visitors.
A flourishing culture – I believe we should use our knowledge, skills, and entrepreneurship to achieve this. A biennial will be a good example of what art can do and how we can better showcase the municipality’s cultural wealth. I’m really looking forward to it.
On behalf of the Mayor and Aldermen,
Roberto ter Hark,
Alderman for Arts & Culture (2023)
